Get Your Vehicle Ready for the Rains

October 16, 2023

As we entered the fall season, evening chill reminds us that rains will soon be upon us. Last winter was unusually wet, but even a regular winter means that your vehicle needs to be ready for rains and storms. At Toole’s Garage Stockton we recommend having you vehicle checked out well before the winter rains start.

Here are a few components that should be looked at:

Windshield Wipers

We don’t think of them in the summer, while the UV rays damage the wipers. Only when the first storm hits, we face the moment of truth – hopefully they hold up, but it’s best to check them before the rain.

Lights

As the Fall and Winter days get shorter, it’s important that all lights be in good working order. Check you external light, signal lights, brake light and high beams to make sure that all operate correctly.

Brake Inspection

Brakes are one of the most important safety systems on your vehicle. We recommend Fall brake inspection, to make sure your vehicle has sufficient brake pads, and that ABS system is functioning correctly. It’s good to also check the condition of the brake fluid as well.

Tires

On a rainy day, good tires are a safety item – they need to have enough tread to evacuate water and keep your car from hydroplaning. Now is the time to check if the tires are properly inflated, make sure that tread is deep enough, and that there are no bald spots.Tire rotation may be a good idea at this time.

Heater/Defroster

As the weather gets colder, you will need to use the car heater and defroster. We recommend having a professional mechanic test the heating system.

You can perform most of the above checks yourself, or you can bring your vehicle to Toole’s Garage in Stockton, and we will be happy to do a winter checkup for you. Naturally we will also check the condition of the car battery, look at belts and hoses, and other subsystems of your vehicle. We can combine these inspections with an oil change, so you don’t have to make two separate appointments.

When it comes to wheel safety, lug nuts don’t always get the attention they deserve. These critical fasteners are what keep your wheels securely attached to your car, and they need to be tightened to a very specific level of force—known as torque. Get it wrong, and you're risking more than just a loose wheel.

It’s difficult to drive anywhere in the Bay Area and not see a lot of Subaru vehicles. Whether it’s the Subaru Crosstrek, WRX, Outback, Forester, or Ascend, Subaru vehicles are everywhere. At Toole’s Garage we are big Subaru fans. Subaru vehicles are built for the great outdoors, and of course California provides plenty of opportunity for on-road and off-road adventures. All wheel drive (AWD) comes standard on many Subaru models, and can provide consistent traction whether you are on a muddy road, or skiing in the Sierras. If a roof rack did not come standard with your model, it’s easy to add. And of course, interior space is pretty generous, especially if you drive an Outback or Ascent – you can stow plenty of camping and hiking gear. At Toole’s Garage we can provide your Subaru with the maintenance it needs to provide you with a reliable ride – wherever your adventures take you. We highly recommend regular oil change – it not only improves performance and extends engine life, but it also allows us to inspect various sub-systems of your Subaru to catch any impending problems (for example, older Subaru models were prone to oil leaks). And if a long summer trip is in the cards, we definitely suggest bringing it in for a checkup. Being a full service auto repair shop, Toole’s Garage can provide your Subaru with routine maintenance services, diagnostics, as well as major repairs. If your Subaru needs new brake pads, has the check engine light “on”, suffers from transmission problems, or needs major engine repairs – we can make your vehicle healthy again. Whether you have owned your Subaru for a long time, or have recently acquired one, bring it to our San Carlos auto repair shop – we will keep your vehicle in peak condition. Call us to make an appointment, or you can make an appointment online, on our website.
