Honda Civic Hybrid - Facts about your hybrid electric car
The Honda Civic Hybrid was first introduced in Japan in late 2001, and it first came to the US in early 2002. It was the first car in the United States to be certified as AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicle) by the California Air Resources Board.
The first models from 2001-2005 had a 5-speed manual transmission, but vehicles in subsequent generations have featured automatic transmissions. The Civic Hybrid was available only in a sedan until the 2013 model year, when Honda introduced a hatchback model.
The Civic Hybrid competes directly with the Toyota Prius and earns approximately the same fuel efficiency ratings from the EPA. It gets about 40% better MPG than the non-hybrid Civic. The Civic Hybrid engine is more powerful than the hybrid engine Honda uses in the Insight. It is also lighter and smaller than the Insight engine, increasing trunk space significantly.
The Civic Hybrid sedan has the appearance of a standard Civic, both inside and outside, making it more appealing to car buyers who are leery of driving a car that “looks like a hybrid.” This has helped sales of the Honda Civic Hybrid top the charts in nearly every demographic.
The Honda Civic Hybrid is nearing the start of its fourth generation and Honda continues to tweak design, efficiency and safety features. Refinements include more power to the engine, improved passenger compartment comforts, better handling and suspension, safety improvements and continuous improvements to the lithium-ion battery packs.
Production of the Honda Civic Hybrid moved from Japan to Indiana in 2013 and production capacity increased to 250,000 units per year at the same time. With these changes, Honda has clearly committed to continuing the Civic Hybrid line for years to come.
The Honda Civic Hybrid has been an award winner since its roll out in 2002. Its hybrid engine won International Engine of the Year for the first three years it existed, as well as winning “Best Fuel Economy” awards for 2003 and 2004. The Civic Hybrid tied with the Toyota Prius for the third Greenest Vehicle in 2003 with the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.
It was named Motor Trend’s North American Car of the Year and Car of the Year in 2006, and the 2006 World Green Car. Awards continued to roll in throughout the years as Honda made improvements to the Civic Hybrid. The 2014 model year was an IIHS top safety pick and the upcoming 2015 model year promises similar accolades.
